WHAT CAN I DO?

Education inequality is an issue that can not be solved by just one simple thing. It is a very complex issue that exists in many forms. We also don't have much direct power over the education system. The government has that power. However, there are some actions that we can do to support low-income neighborhoods and other actions we can participate in to promote the issue of education inequality. If we are loud enough, our government officials may propose laws that promote education inequality.

Here are some actions you can do!

Sign Petitions
Signing Petitions shows people what issues society cares about. It spreads the issue to important people such as legislators and media officials, who can change the policies affecting these issues.
A popular recent movement is the Defund the Police Movement. The goal of this movement is to redirect funds from the police and other government agencies and reallocate them to social services such as healthcare, housing, and education. This funding can be given to low-income schools to make them equal. This can provide them with things they are currently lacking such as books, technology, and cousenlors..

Donate to Charity
Donating to a charity is always a good thing! Charities are organizations that are made to help and financially support those who are in need. If you have enough money, this is a great way to support this effort!
There are many charities that provide funding for education. One of these charities is the Education Trust. They are advocates for achievement for all students, especially those of color and in low-income neighborhoods. They research to find reasons for these inequalities and they promote practices that can end it. They also advocate for legislation that align with to fixing these findings.

Go to a Protest
Protests are another way to make your voice heard. Protests are mass demonstrations advocating for a certain issue. These protestors' voices are heard by the public and the government. These protests can sway public opinion to support this issue, pressuring the government to do the same.
After the murder of George Floyd, many Black Lives Matter protests have occured, advocating for the rights of Black people. Education inequality impacts Black people in many ways. Less funding goes to schools where a majority of the students are Black and they are targeted in the School-to-Prison Pipeline system. When advocating for Education Inequality, you are also advocating for Black lives.

Contact Your Representative
If you want to get your voice heard directly, you can contact your representative! These reps can be from the federal, state, or even city level. You can call or email them.
Before contacting them, think about what the government can do to solve this issue. For example, what sort of legislation can they pass to change the current system of education? What is the most effective way to fight educaiton inequality?
When contacting them, talk about the facts of education inequality and how it is impacting people. After, propose what they should do and why they should do it. Remember to use professional language while emailing them!
